Summary Report of Local Alliance Work 2005/06

Smoke Free Derwentside was formed in July 2004, funded initially by Neighbourhood Renewal Funds (NRF) and additional funds from the Primary Care Trust (PCT).
Smoke Free Derwentside is an alliance of people who live or work in Derwentside. They are united by the aim to make Derwentside a healthier place to live and work by reducing the exposure of non-smokers to second hand smoke and to develop work to control tobacco use in the wider community.
The alliance membership has included people from a wide range of groups and all sectors in the wider community including; smokers, ex-smokers and people who have never smoked, children, adults, volunteers, publicans, hoteliers, health professionals, environmental health officers, teachers and politicians.
Smoke Free Derwentside reports to the Derwentside Partnership and both County Durham PCT and Derwentside Council are committed to reducing the impact of smoking and second hand smoke on the health of the population they serve.

In the months since the introduction of Smokefree legislation in July 2007 Smoke Free Derwentside has struggled to maintain the commitment of some of its members and attendance at meetings has dwindled. A major priority for this Alliance in 2008/09 is to review and re-engage with its membership.
Priorities For Smoke Free Derwentside 2008/9 will include;
· Implement agreed actions ensuing from the Alliance self evaluation which was carried out using the Fresh Local Alliance Toolkit.
· Produce an agreed action plan for Smoke Free Derwentside 2008/09.
· Elect a Chair and Vice Chair.
· Respond to the consultation on the National Tobacco Control Strategy.
· Respond to Fresh regional consultations on key issues.
· Support national and regional campaigns at a local level.
· Increase the number of Alliance members who are media trained.
· Promote the de-normalisation of tobacco by work with key partners to maintain and increase awareness of the dangers of second-hand smoke.
· Target routine and manual workers in line with Department of Health priorities.
· Review current provision of drop-ins and out of hours stop smoking services to ensure they are accessible to target priority groups.
