Smoke Free Durham and Chester-le-Street was formed on 4th July 2005. It is an alliance of people who live or work in the area. They are united by the aim to make Durham and Chester-le-Street a healthier place to live and work by contributing to a reduction in health inequalities and improving the current and future health of all those living or working in the area, through work to reduce the exposure of non-smokers to second hand smoke and to develop work to control tobacco use in the wider community.
The alliance aims to involve people from a wide range of groups and all sectors in the wider community in working towards these aims including; smokers, ex-smokers and people who have never smoked, children, adults, volunteers, publicans, hoteliers, health professionals, local authority officers, teachers and politicians.

In the months since the introduction of smokefree legislation in July 2007 Smoke Free Durham and Chester-le-Street has struggled to maintain the commitment of some of its members and attendance at meetings has dwindled. A major priority for this Alliance in 2008/09 is to review and re-engage with its membership.
