Summary Report of Local Alliance Work 2005/06
Vision:
A smoke free North Tyneside by 2010
Aims:
To reduce morbidity and mortality from heart disease and cancer due to tobacco smoke
Objectives:
The Tobacco Control Strategy focuses on three main objectives to make North Tyneside a smoke free borough by 2010. The strategic approach will be to de-normalise smoking through action to
- Prevent the uptake of smoking
- Protect non-smokers from exposure to second hand smoke
- Support people wanting to stop smoking
Examples of local work:
Tobacco Control was identified as a priority by the NT Local Strategic Partnership in its Health Plan. The Health Partnership is therefore committed to developing strategic frameworks for these priority areas to focus the efforts of its partners and hold stakeholders to account for action to reduce smoking.
Smoke Free North Tyneside Alliance first convened in June 2006 and now has a Tobacco Control Strategy and a recently reviewed Action Plan for 08/09 which will set out how the partners plan to achieve a smoke free borough.
The Stop Smoking Service provides support to those wishing to quit smoking, and continues to be among the best in the country. In addition to this, staff members at the Health Living Centres in North Tyneside are trained in providing brief advice interventions, and several 'drop in' services and workplace services have been piloted over the last year.
Stop smoking sessions have also been running at local authority Children’s Centres in conjunction with Barnardo’s.
The 'Smoking in Pregnancy' action group is dedicated to reducing the number of women smoking whilst pregnant. Its members include representatives from the Stop Smoking Service, Community Health Development Unit and Sure Start.
There are currently 75 schools holding the Smoke Free School Award, and a further 9 schools holding the Healthy School Award and that are also smoke free.
