Tobacco Control in Sunderland
Tackling tobacco is a priority for Sunderland Local Authority, the Teaching Primary Care Trust and partners. Tobacco is identified as a priority in the health chapter of the community strategy and the Local Area Agreement. Significant additional funding has been secured through the Annual Operating Plan and the Department of Health to resource local NHS Stop Smoking Services and deliver the Tobacco Control agenda.

Tobacco control across Sunderland is a multi-agency Sunderland Smoke Free Alliance. Each organisation represented on the smoke free alliance has responsibility for implementing specific parts of the strategy and achieving the local targets.
The plan is co-ordinated by Sunderland's TPCT and overseen by the Sunderland Smoke Free Alliance.
Sunderland Smoke Free Alliance
The Smoke Free Alliance is responsible for developing and implementing the Sunderland Tobacco Control strategy and is chaired by the Director of Public Health.
Vision
To contribute to improving the health, environment and economic status of people living and working in the City of Sunderland through co-ordinated, effective and sustained action against tobacco by organisations and individuals working in partnership.
Aim
The aim of Sunderland Tobacco Control Strategy is to reduce smoking prevalence and associated disease, disability and death in Sunderland by preventing uptake of smoking, encouraging and supporting people to stop smoking and eliminating exposure to second-hand smoke.
