Don't give up on quitting - campaign overview

A HEALTH campaign celebrating real life quitters urged smokers never to give up on quitting in the countdown to No Smoking Day 2011.

Terri McGrath, from Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, was one of many smokers who had tried to quit several times before she successfully quit smoking with the help of her local NHS Stop Smoking Service.

Fresh launched the mini-campaign to encourage the majority of smokers who have tried to quit before to give it another go, and not feel like a failure because they haven't succeeded yet. A survey found 83% of North East smokers would like to be able to quit and 93% regret ever starting.

The campaign urged people to give themselves the best chance of quitting by getting advice from their pharmacy, GP or local NHS Stop Smoking Service. Even if one type of stop smoking product has failed before, another could make all the difference.

A range of organisations joined forces for the campaign. As well as radio and newspaper adverts, posters and flyers featuring real quitters were put on display in Boots stores across the North East, while Gala Bingo celebrated No Smoking Day during games.
