Plain Packs Protect - campaign overview
Parents across the North East are being urged to help protect more children from starting to smoke by backing plain, standardised tobacco packaging of tobacco.
The "Plain Packs Protect" campaigned is aimed at helping turn off the tap of North East child smokers who are attracted to glitzy brands.
The average age most smokers in the North East start is just 15. Cigarette brands are a loophole in advertising and there are brands many people think resemble Lego, boxes shaped and coloured like make up and cigarettes marketed at trendy young women on sale in the North East.
Plain packs protect is supported by FRESH, ASH, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. Smoking is still the North East's biggest killer, claiming the lives of 11 people a day.
The Government is launching a three month public consultation on whether the UK should adopt the plain, standardised packaging of tobacco products to protect children from tobacco promotion.
Read a major report from Cancer Research UK which shows the link between tobacco packaging and attractiveness of smoking to children.
