Take 7 Steps Out - campaign overview

Take 7 Steps Out is aimed at protecting around 80,000 children in the North East who are exposed to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke in the home. Supported by the British Lung Foundation, Royal College of Physicians and doctors, it encourages parents not to smoke inside.

Some parents still don't believe or understand the overwhelming evidence that smoking around children can cause serious illnesses, or assume that opening a window provides full protection. 7 Steps carries a clear message that taking it outside is the best way to protect your child.

The first phase in August 2010 resulted in:

  • 58% of smokers in the North East seeing the campaign
  • 50% saying it made them realise smoking near children is more harmful than they realised
  • 28% went outside to smoke as a result
  • 42% were more likely to seek help to quit smoking

The campaign supports the ongoing Fresh Smokefree Families programme which delivers training to frontline health and council staff.
