Protecting children, families and communities - programme overview
A recent survey shows that 85% of North East people now support the smokefree law. More and more families like the Irvings from Northumberland are quitting because of growing awareness of the risks of second hand smoke to children.
However, there are still well over 430,000 smokers in our region - and the number of people harmed by secondhand smoke is still too high.
People who live with smokers and regularly breathe in their smoke are increasing the risks of cancer, heart disease and many other illnesses. Around 12,000 people are estimated to die each year from "second hand smoke."
This is why promoting smokefree environments and raising awareness of the harm cause by tobacco is a major priority.
